If you have 100s of hosts, it is almost assumed there is some automation thing you could run (puppet, ansible, chef, cfengine, rdist) to keep homedirs correctly created, so pam_homedir is in a weird middle ground where you want some automation, but not all 10:13 < sibiria> i would also offload it to whatever component is doing the "on-boarding" of new users 10:13 < sibiria> and let something like ansible or so, in the simplest form, set up user framework on relevant machines 10:13 < IcePic> even if crontab runs "sync-user-dirs.sh" every 30 minutes, that doesn't sound too awful for a new hire in a company to hear: "this is your laptop and it is prepared for you, in <30 mins, you will be able to log in on all servers ... One of the vms is using the automatic partition/slice layout during the install and the on the 2nd I created a single root partition to put everything on (I understand this is worse). Anyways, the issue is that I'm getting kernel relink errors in both vms but it seems to happen more often on the one with the single root partition, additionally 18:54 < Xeroine> the single root one gets "Killed" messages when booting which I can see in my stdout thanks to qemu's -serial mon:stdio. I can't exactly reproduce the issue every time on exactly the same inputs, like for example, `halt -p` and `reboot` sometimes also gives kernel relink errors. The only thing I can replicate is the single root partition one recieving either "Killed" somewhere in the boot messages (which doesn't show up in dmesg by the way) or a " 18:54 < Xeroine> reorder_kernel: failed". I don't know what to do, can anyone give some advice on what might be causing this? 18:55 -!- nehsou^ [~nehsou@c-76-105-96-13.hsd1.ga.comcast.net] has joined #openbsd 18:56 < Xeroine> Here's a paste with my qemu run script and output from my stdout, dmesg and /usr/share/relink/kernel/GENERIC.MP/relink.log on the single root partition vm 18:56 < Xeroine> https://bpa.st/Y6QSO 18:57 < Xeroine> I know this is kind of long but maybe someone has some clues, I don't know 19:01 -!- nawo [~nawo@128.194.2.255] has quit [Ping timeout: 265 seconds] 19:03 -!- nawo [~nawo@165.91.13.16] has joined #openbsd 19:04 -!- nawo [~nawo@165.91.13.16] has quit [Remote host closed the connection] 19:05 < Xeroine> oh I said relink a lot, I meant reorder, if there's any difference even. 19:11 -!- gh34 [~textual@cpe-184-58-181-106.wi.res.rr.com] has quit [Remote host closed the connection] 19:11 < Xeroine> I'm not sure if this even matters a lot. I guess it uses the non-unique one? 19:11 < pardis> yes, if it fails the old kernel just stays where it is 19:12 < pardis> but based on your paste, the cause of this is the same as the other issues you're seeing, that processes are getting killed 19:12 < thrig> maybe the new /bsd is put in place atomically, maybe not 19:12 -!- gh34 [~textual@cpe-184-58-181-106.wi.res.rr.com] has joined #openbsd 19:12 < pardis> actually, a thought occurs, have you looked at dmesg? 19:12 < pardis> you looked at /var/log/messages before, but I just realised that if processes are being killed, then maybe syslogd is too 19:13 < pardis> so dmesg may not end up in /var/log/messages as it normally would 19:13 < vortexx> IcePic: thanks! 19:14 < pardis> looked at dmesg after the problem occurs, I mean, so not the boot dmesg you have there 19:14 < pardis> it is very strange for processes to just be killed randomly with nothing in dmesg and no resource contention 19:16 -!- gnucode [~gnucode@user/jab] has quit [Remote host closed the connection] 19:16 -!- gnucode [~gnucode@user/jab] has joined #openbsd 19:18 -!- hitest [~hitest@user/hitest] has joined #openbsd 19:19 -!- grobi [~grobi@user/grobi] has joined #openbsd 19:20 -!- ClaudioM [claudiom@tilde.institute] has quit [Quit: leaving] 19:22 < Xeroine> pardis: I looked at dmesg, yeah.
