northbridge and cooling is adequate) 20:15 < leah> oh, yeah we also did this recently, with openbsd: 20:15 < leah> https://libreboot.org/docs/uboot/uboot-openbsd.html 20:16 < leah> i'd actually appreciate it if someone has Samsung Chromebook Plus XE513C24 (gru_kevin) or other gnu-bob/gru-kevin chromebook, to test that, and try to get it running 20:16 < leah> that last link is arm-based Why is it that tty (TERM=pccon etc) in OpenBSD breaks colorful tools such as htop, emacs, etc? There are a couple of mail threads & a reddit post. But what is the reason behind this behavior? Can we not fix it? I want OpenBSD without X - but it is barely usable. Emacs for instance does not work in tty - lines missing etc. 23:36 -!- ArtGravity [~artgravit@user/artgravity] has quit [] 23:37 < pardis> why do you want OpenBSD without X? 23:37 < thrig> probably because nobody has bothered to implement various fancy things in the console, or also pccon is lacking various terminfo foo 23:38 < megeve> Running a tty-only system (no X) feels like extra focus mode. Really appealing to me. Wish I could do it w/ OpenBSD. 23:39 < megeve> Also - not running X means fewer processes, longer battery life - no? 23:39 < thrig> on linux, my first task is usually to turn off all the color spam 23:39 < Bradipo> Many moons ago, OpenBSD did have a colorizable console. 23:40 < Bradipo> Man pages had a nifty color to them (bold cyan for key words). 23:40 < Bradipo> That went away for some reason. 23:40 < megeve> Even good old dmesg -- adding a bit of color helps quickly identify the stuff you're looking for. (So just enough color to guide your eyes) 23:40 < pardis> I would be shocked and amazed if X made a significant dent to battery life compared to the programs you use it to run 23:41 -!- n4dir [~user@i59F518C0.versanet.de] has quit [Remote host closed the connection] 23:42 < pardis> if you just want a terminal, you can run X with only a fullscreem xterm and have a better experience without relying on (realistically) months or years of developer time to bring the text console up to feature parity (for zero benefit, given that xterm already has those features) 23:42 < thrig> (Xorg is at 373:53, then comes sndiod at 79:43, and then a tmux at 8:36 for the TIME column) 23:44 < megeve> pardis, thrig: appreciate your advice - yes running X w/ fullscreen xterm may be a solution - I'll measure CPU consumption 23:45 < Bradipo> Interesting... for me, Xorg is at 8:36, firefox at 25:20, chrome at 24:20 and another firefox at 17:29. 23:46 < Bradipo> What I don't understand is why chrome is so high, I haven't even used it except for a 15 minute session, the rest of the time it has been doing nothing in the background. 23:46 < thrig> I don't run firefox much, and certainly do not leave it open for long (most of the CPU burn is probably from beating up zombies in CDDA) 23:47 < Bradipo> CDDA on OpenBSD? 23:56 -!- m1dnight [~christoph@78-22-4-67.access.telenet.be] has joined #openbsd 23:58 -!- topcat001 [~topcat001@user/topcat001] has quit [Quit: WeeChat 3.8] 23:58 -!- rawgreaze [~rawgreaze@user/rawgreaze] has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer] 23:59 -!- the_sea_peoples [~the_sea_p@2603-8000-b400-8764-dea6-32ff-fe16-a622.res6.spectrum.com] has joined #openbsd --- Log closed Wed May 10 00:00:24 2023
