And gparted initially refused to even recognise what kind of a partition table the disk had, displaying the disk as a single partition with 'Unknown' filesystem type. After I fiddled with testdisk a bit, it shows me only four partitions (I had eight) and the rest is unallocated space. Trying 07:08 < LordRishav> to make a new partition on that unallocated space says it can't form more than 4 primary partitions, which sounds ridiculous considering I had 8 before. 07:09 < caze> Do you know what an extended partition is/ 07:10 < LordRishav> Yes, they must've been extended partitions indeed but gparted refuses to make me form any kind of partition on that unallocated space 07:14 -!- sliced [~sliced@ip-185.238.207.18.laito.net.pl] has quit [Ping timeout: 252 seconds] 07:16 -!- ikichigai [~ikichigai@5.43.228.119] has joined #openbsd 07:16 -!- sliced [~sliced@ip-185.238.207.18.laito.net.pl] has joined #openbsd 07:25 -!- shiranaihito_ [~shiranaih@ppp-58-8-155-40.revip2.asianet.co.th] has joined #openbsd 07:29 -!- djhankb [~djhankb@208.113.164.68] has quit [Remote host closed the connection] 07:30 -!- djhankb [~djhankb@208.113.164.68] has joined #openbsd 07:31 -!- deepestt1aster [~deepestto@user/deepesttoaster] has quit [Remote host closed the connection] 07:32 -!- shiranaihito_ [~shiranaih@ppp-58-8-155-40.revip2.asianet.co.th] has quit [Ping timeout: 260 seconds] 07:33 -!- deepesttoaster [~deepestto@user/deepesttoaster] has joined #openbsd 07:40 -!- varioust [~varioust@gateway/tor-sasl/varioust] has quit [Ping timeout: 260 seconds] 07:47 -!- sunwind [~paradox@gateway/vpn/pia/sunwind] has quit [Quit: Outside Context Problem.] 07:57 -!- user71 [~user71@2001:1530:1003:34fc:1e6f:65ff:fe88:557f] has joined #openbsd 08:05 -!- djhankb [~djhankb@208.113.164.68] has quit [Remote host closed the connection] 08:06 -!- djhankb [~djhankb@208.113.164.68] has joined #openbsd 08:07 -!- mlw [~mlw@154.127.13.99] has joined #openbsd 08:14 -!- antranigv_ [~antranigv@37.157.221.130] has joined #openbsd 08:15 -!- antranigv [~antranigv@37.157.221.130] has quit [Ping timeout: 260 seconds] 08:16 -!- gbowne1 [~gbowne1@97-113-75-249.tukw.qwest.net] has quit [Quit: Leaving] 08:17 -!- lavaball [~Melissa@31.204.155.215] has joined #openbsd 08:19 -!- LordRishav [~LordRisha@user/lordrishav] has quit [Ping timeout: 268 seconds] 08:23 -!- antranigv_ is now known as antranigv 08:26 -!- lagash [lagash@cronfox.freeirc.org] has quit [Ping timeout: 268 seconds] 08:27 -!- aaro [aaro@user/aaro] has quit [Ping timeout: 256 seconds] 08:35 -!- CrashOverride [~strcat@p5485443f.dip0.t-ipconnect.de] has joined #openbsd 08:36 -!- A1ice [~a1ice@gateway/tor-sasl/a1ice] has joined #openbsd 08:39 -!- djhankb [~djhankb@208.113.164.68] has quit [Remote host closed the connection] 08:40 -!- djhankb [~djhankb@208.113.164.68] has joined #openbsd 08:41 -!- bilegeek [~bilegeek@2600:1008:b063:3463:2db4:7d44:233e:64aa] has quit [Quit: Leaving] 08:42 -!- hukadan_ [~hukadan@89-233-108-166.static.hvvc.us] has quit [Quit: ZNC - The MAKEDEV step. What exactly does that do? Because it seems to be applied to each drive except for the drive OpenBSD will be installed on. 13:23 < sibiria> it just creates the device so that the installer can access it, if necessary. it's not always the case 13:24 -!- byteskeptical [~amnesia@user/byteskeptical] has quit [Remote host closed the connection] 13:25 < oldlaptop> Unlike most linuxes nowadays, OpenBSD doesn't have some fake ephemeral filesystem with all the device nodes on it, they're just (not regular) files on the / filesystem. In the installed system that normally means /dev contains all the device nodes you could possibly want (or at least all the device nodes you're remotely likely to want), but the installer's filesystem doesn't have enough inodes available for that, so it comes with almost no device nodes 13:26 < oldlaptop> the major practical consequence is that sometimes (if you're doing things with disk management outside the installer script, which normally will make nodes as it needs them) you need to create disk device nodes yourself 13:27 < nerap> I remember inodes as the thing that is the cause of email servers running out of space, before actually all the bytes of the hard drive are used up. 13:27 -!- deltahotel [~deltahote@user/deltahotel] has quit [Ping timeout: 260 seconds] 13:28 -!- byteskeptical [~amnesia@user/byteskeptical] has joined #openbsd 13:28 < oldlaptop> tl;dr most unix filesystems are created with a maximum number of distinct files they can hold, the installer cannot hold enough distinct files to have all the device nodes 13:29 < sibiria> it could, if theo wanted it to 13:29 < oldlaptop> Perhaps SibiriaBSD should 13:29 < sibiria> he just doesn't know if he wants to move forward, backward or stay still 13:30 < vortexx> I have had to reformat /usr with double the number of inodes so I could expand ports.tar.gz in it (2Gb partition) but that's an edge cse 13:30 < vortexx> s/cse/case 13:30 < nerap> What device does rd1 usually correspond to? 13:30 -!- s3 [~bn@user/bn] has joined #openbsd 13:30 < vortexx> ramdisk, from bsd.rd 13:31 < oldlaptop> In most cases devices are named after their drivers, which have manual pages: https://man.openbsd.org/rd 13:31 < oldlaptop> (in this case rd(4) doesn't mention, directly, that its only real application is as the installer's root filesystem) 13:31 -!- finkfox [~finkfox@user/finkfox] has quit [Ping timeout: 272 seconds] 13:32 < oldlaptop> or major real application 13:32 < sibiria> nerap: once you reach the right point in the installer, it will give you an option to enumerate the storage devices so you can find out what you're booting from and what your primary storage is 13:32 < oldlaptop> (Perhaps there's someone out there with a firewall-in-a-kernel system) 13:32 < nerap> I invoked fdisk -e sd0, but when specifying the offset of 1024bytes, I get "partition 3 can't start inside partition 0". Is my disk fuc..ahem broken? 13:33 < nerap> I see sd0, which is probably the nvme drive, rd0 the ram, sd1 the usb stick. 13:33 < sibiria> you don't need to do these things. the installer will handle everything for you, with the exception of readying additional device nodes in case they're not already in place 13:34 -!- mlw [~mlw@154.74.142.5] has joined #openbsd 13:34 -!- jsolano [~juan@li2042-246.members.linode.com] has quit [Remote host closed the connection] 13:40 -!- GnarledHorn [~GnarledHo@c-67-174-30-57.hsd1.fl.comcast.net] has joined #openbsd 13:44 < nerap> :OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO it's booting 13:44 < nerap> nvm, it's only the stick.
