openbsd kernel to be more verbose about what's happening when it dies.. 03:00 < cow321> tcg is supposed to be slower than kvm right? it seems quite a bit slower even doing basic things like pkg_add 03:02 < mischief> it is because all of the instructions are emulated/jitted, not run natively. 03:03 < cow321> yeah, I don't think it is going to work for me. I updated the host to alpine edge instead of alpine stable to get newer QEMU 03:03 < cow321> ill try that in a few mins 03:07 -!- seninha [~seninha@user/seninha] has quit [Remote host closed the connection] 03:09 -!- mover [~hischild@user/mover] has quit [Quit: leaving] 03:21 -!- foul_owl [~kerry@185.216.231.180] has quit [Ping timeout: 245 seconds] 03:24 -!- admin1234 [~admin@ti0004q160-6721.bb.online.no] has joined #openbsd 03:26 -!- gnucode [~gnucode@user/jab] has quit [Remote host closed the connection] 03:26 -!- zoraj [~ubuntu@41.136.58.208] has quit [Ping timeout: 246 seconds] 03:26 -!- gnucode [~gnucode@user/jab] has joined #openbsd 03:28 -!- zoraj [~ubuntu@41.136.29.207] has joined #openbsd 03:29 -!- mikewilzn [609e48c489@user/mikewilzn] has joined #openbsd 03:30 -!- chaky [~chaky@93-143-110-112.adsl.net.t-com.hr] has quit [Ping timeout: 252 seconds] 03:32 -!- chaky [~chaky@93-143-135-75.adsl.net.t-com.hr] has joined #openbsd 03:33 -!- srfsh [~srfsh@user/srfsh] has quit [Ping timeout: 260 seconds] 03:33 -!- radhitya [o34jixrzqp@user/radhitya] has quit [Ping timeout: 252 seconds] 03:33 -!- admin1234 [~admin@ti0004q160-6721.bb.online.no] has quit [Ping timeout: 252 seconds] 03:34 -!- rjc [bdfpjlv9zu@srv.dataswamp.org] has quit [Ping timeout: 252 seconds] 03:34 -!- prahou [lupldihpht@user/prahou] has quit [Ping timeout: 264 seconds] 03:37 -!- memset [~memset@gateway/tor-sasl/memset] has joined #openbsd 03:41 -!- memset_ [~memset@gateway/tor-sasl/memset] has quit [Ping timeout: 260 seconds] 03:41 -!- foul_owl [~kerry@157.97.134.167] has joined #openbsd 03:48 -!- srfsh [~srfsh@user/srfsh] has joined #openbsd 03:52 -!- _zip100 [~zip100@193.32.248.153] has joined #openbsd 03:53 -!- zip100- [~zip100@185.213.155.230] has quit [Ping timeout: 272 seconds] 03:54 -!- rjc [klf4nv0zzh@srv.dataswamp.org] has joined #openbsd 03:55 -!- prahou [o2xhbj04xn@srv.dataswamp.org] has joined #openbsd 03:59 -!- runelind [~runelind@user/runelind] has quit [Quit: ZNC 1.9.1 - https://znc.in] 04:01 -!- radhitya [nvl8vemf9g@srv.dataswamp.org] has joined #openbsd 04:05 -!- eki [~eki@159-255-247-158.bb.dnainternet.fi] has quit [Quit: leaving] 04:12 -!- runelind [~runelind@user/runelind] has joined #openbsd 04:12 -!- admin1234 [~admin@ti0004q160-6721.bb.online.no] has joined #openbsd 04:13 -!- memset [~memset@gateway/tor-sasl/memset] has quit [Ping timeout: 260 seconds] 04:14 -!- eki [~eki@159-255-247-158.bb.dnainternet.fi] has joined #openbsd 04:17 -!- Aedil [~adrian@146.52.105.208] has joined #openbsd 04:20 -!- runelind [~runelind@user/runelind] has quit [Quit: ZNC 1.9.1 - https://znc.in] 04:20 -!- admin1234 [~admin@ti0004q160-6721.bb.online.no] has quit [Changing host] 04:20 -!- admin1234 [~admin@user/admin1234] has joined #openbsd 04:28 -!- hwpplayer1 [~user@user/hwpplayer1] has joined #openbsd 04:31 -!- runelind [~runelind@user/runelind] has joined #openbsd 04:34 -!- mw1144 [~mw1144@67-1-124-37.tcso.qwest.net] has joined #openbsd 04:36 -!- memset [~memset@gateway/tor-sasl/memset] has joined #openbsd 04:41 -!- dqk [~dqk@lfbn-lyo-1-297-94.w2-7.abo.wanadoo.fr] has quit [Ping timeout: 252 seconds] 04:55 -!- mxz_ [~mxz@user/mxz] has quit [Ping timeout: 248 seconds] 04:56 -!- mxz_ [~mxz@user/mxz] has joined #openbsd 04:56 -!- mxz [~mxz@user/mxz] has quit [Ping timeout: 252 seconds] 04:56 -!- mikewilzn [609e48c489@user/mikewilzn] has left #openbsd [] 04:56 -!- mxz_ is now known as mxz 04:58 < admin1234>

16:30 < blowfist> pardis: I see, so I'm guessing that it is mandatory to use 'pledge' to remove access to 'exec' and potentially fork as well so that unveil is not bypassed by further child processes
16:31 < sibiria> generally you do those things first before anything else
16:32 < sibiria> anything that needs elevated privileges needs to happen first, and just once
16:32 < sibiria> else you'll need a typical elevated parent process that holds tohse privs and trickle down information it can acquire
16:33 < sibiria> e.g. master process reloading cert/privkeys etc. and communicating them to lesser-privileged child process

16:39 < blowfist> sibiria: that makes a lot of sense. I was just hoping that we could unveil for exec'ed processes so we can lock them to specific areas of the filesystem. I'm sure there would be many situations where this would have been an interesting feature.

16:43 < shtrophic> Has any of the long-time OpenBSD enjoyers here made the experience that the second newest release is more stable than the newest version? I have 7.6 running on an ARM VPS which is only causing issues for me. It occaisonally either completely freezes or the network becomes unreachable. I remember 7.5 being less problematic, and right now I am thinking about "reinstalling" 7.5 on an x86 VPS...
16:43 < blowfist> sibiria: I guess for these kind of case, chroot is still a better method :)
16:44 < sibiria> shtrophic: for me, on an arm vps, 7.6 actually works well. i had problems with 7.4 and 7.5 on the same vps host (though i can't confirm if the two VPSes launched on the exact same hypervisor setup)
16:44 -!- ivdsangen [~ivo@86-95-161-96.fixed.kpn.net] has joined #openbsd
16:46 < lts> I have half a dozen ARM VPSs running 7.6 without issues
16:47 < sibiria> shtrophic: the problem i had manifested in the way you describe. i did come up with a weird method to fend it off, but right now i can't recall
16:47 < sibiria> but i'd see jumpier and jumpier network quality, and eventually the guest seized
16:48 < sibiria> it looked like some sort of interrupt storm or hiccup, and iirc it went away as soon as i put some heavy CPU load on the machine
16:48 < sibiria> then it'd calm down for half a minute or more, until it had another episode
16:48 < lts> Noisy neighbours perhaps
16:48 < sibiria> it was either CPU or network stress i triggered to make it calm down
16:48 < shtrophic> But you could still access your VPS?
16:49 -!- G_w [Gw@BenAhmed.Online] has left #openbsd [Closing Window]
16:49 < shtrophic> For me, no chance. Even the virtual console wouldn't work
16:49 < shtrophic> And the CPU usage would be at 100%
16:49 < sibiria> as long as i made it calm down. if i left it unchecked during an "episode" it would eventually seize up completely. not even the local serial terminal would work
16:49 < sibiria> opensd shat itself, simply
16:49 < sibiria> openbsd*
16:49 < sibiria> this was in oracle cloud on 7.4 and 7.5, so the host CPU is Ampere Altra
16:50 < sibiria> but incidentally i did not see this problem on all openbsd Arm VPSes there, only on some, despite running same version 7.4/7.5
16:50 < sibiria> i currently run 7.6 there and it has behaved just fine
16:51 < sibiria> i could see the problem starting by just monitoring sys/spin/intr in top
16:51 < sibiria> as soon as i saw it rise it was bound for freeze up within 15-20 seconds
16:51 < shtrophic> For me, it started with 7.6
16:51 < shtrophic> Also on an ampere altra
16:52 < sibiria> and as soon as i put CPU or network load on it - i can't recall which - it immediately calmed down for a while
16:52 < shtrophic> x86 is probably more reliable...
16:52 < shtrophic> My VPS has always more or less medium network load
16:53 < shtrophic> Say, 10kB/s
16:53 < sibiria> that sounds like no network load at all to me
16:53 < shtrophic> Well I mean
16:53 < shtrophic> "No" network load is 0 for me

17:09 < oldlaptop> (pkglocate is in the package "pkglocatedb" - sqlports, and therefore something like openports.pl, will also search contents)
17:10 < oldlaptop> or rather sqlports doesn't search contents, but someone or something that speaks sql can search in it
17:12 * dfdx installs pkglocate
17:13 < dfdx> hhhh
17:13 < dfdx> sorry, let me say that again
17:13 < dfdx> ahhhhh
17:13 < dfdx> thank you, this clears everything up. i got it now, thanks again.

19:47 < dfdx> Hi #openbsd. I'm trying to install this lousy ruby/rails app and I keep getting this error: Error: EMFILE: too many open files
19:47 < dfdx> I've googled and gotten several potential solutions, including increasing kern.maxfiles via sysctl, and making some adjustments via ulimit.
19:48 -!- voidheart [~Thunderbi@user/voidheart] has joined #openbsd
19:48 < dfdx> i was just wondering if either of those sound like good ideas. for some reason, however, `doas -u _daemon ulimit -a` doesn't seem to work, I get an error: "doas: ulimit: command not found"
19:49 -!- eki [~eki@159-255-247-158.bb.dnainternet.fi] has joined #openbsd
19:53 < pardis> you need to figure out which limit you are running into first
19:54 < pardis> it will probably be the ulimit, since that is lower by default
19:54 < dfdx> yeah. sysctl kern.maxfiles=20480 didn't seem to do anything.
19:54 < pardis> ulimit is a ksh built-in, not a binary, so of course you can't run it with doas
19:54 < pardis> the appropriate place to configure limits for daemons is login.conf(5)
19:54 -!- fluentpwn [e7b4bb6755@spooky.academy] has joined #openbsd
19:55 < dfdx> pardis: aahhh. and the changes take immediately when I run with doas?
19:55 < pardis> they should, yes, but if you're setting up a service you probably want to write an rc.d script for it
19:58 < dfdx> I just cranked up openfiles-max and openfiles-cur to 20480 (some arbitrarily large number; i wasn't sure how to pick). we'll see if it does anything.
19:58 -!- voidheart [~Thunderbi@user/voidheart] has quit [Quit: voidheart]
19:58 < dfdx> ugh. no. it didn't. I still get the error.
19:59 < mischief> you need to relogin for it to take effect.. it's not instant
20:00 < dfdx> drat. I'm remote, ssh'ing in.
20:01 < mischief> ssh 127.0.0.1
20:01 < pardis> ah, actually I don't think doas applies limits
20:01 < pardis> you probably need to do 'doas su -l' instead
20:02 < pardis> su -l will simulate a login and hence take limits from login.conf
20:02 < dfdx> but my daemon is set to /sbin/nologin.
20:02 < dfdx> "This account is currently not available."
20:02 < pardis> so use -s too
20:03 < pardis> that's what /etc/rc.d/rc.subr does
20:03 < pardis> you *don't* need to relogin if you're not changing the limits for the user you're logged in as
20:03 < pardis> that will do absolutely nothing

20:10 < dfdx> do I change the daemon or default class? I'm assuming daemon, since _mastodon was created with -L daemon.
20:11 < pardis> setting these limits for the daemon login class will affect most other daemons too, which could lead to resource exhaustion in case of a security breach or even just an innocent bug
20:11 < pardis> I would suggest creating a new login class just for this service, that inherits from daemon, if you need to set the limits so high

20:14 < dfdx> both under the daemon class.
20:15 < dfdx> however, when I `su -s /bin/ksh -l _mastodon` and run ulimit -a, I still see "nofiles(descriptors) 128"

20:19 < dfdx> pardis: no, but /etc/login.conf.d does
20:19 < dfdx> pardis: https://dpaste.com/EFG7RMFVE
20:22 < dfdx> i have a few daemons running: sshd and postgresql, for example. I need the first to do the work, i need the second because mastodon's installation requres connecting to the sql server.
20:23 < pardis> you can't comment things out like that in login.conf
20:23 < pardis> \ means continue on the next line, and the next line is a comment, so the daemon class definition ends after maxproc=infinity now
20:24 < dfdx> :| oh duh.
20:24 < dfdx> there we go. ulimit -a now shows a larger nofiles(descriptors): 7030
20:27 < dfdx> woohoo! that worked.

23:17 < oldlaptop> gnucode: "USB speakers" or "USB headphones" are, actually, USB sound cards (I suppose not "cards", really) that happen to be built into headphones or speakers.
23:17 < oldlaptop> I'd rather have them separate, generally.
23:21 < oldlaptop> It's got (as you've been told) nothing to do with OpenBSD, but assuming you're either in the US or find their international shipping reasonable, I've got little but good to say about Parts Express' house brands for speakers/amplifiers
23:23 < oldlaptop> e.g. https://www.parts-express.com/Dayton-Audio-B452-4-1-2-2-Way-Bookshelf-Speaker-Pair-300-452?quantity=1 / https://www.parts-express.com/Lepai-LP-2020AD-Digital-HiFi-Audio-Mini-Amplifier-with-Power-Supply-310-307?quantity=1 (presumably there's some USB audio interface you could throw in with that stuff, if you felt the need)
23:25 < oldlaptop> arguably worthwhile just to have the analog signal path outside the electromagnetic disaster area inside the computer case
23:25 < gnucode> oldlaptop: thanks!
